The Essex County Club was founded in 1893 and is situated 24 miles north of Boston. Today, Essex is home to one of the finest Donald Ross golf courses in the country, ten grass and ten clay tennis courts, three paddle tennis courts and a full size swimming pool. Essex was admitted as the sixth member of the USGA and has hosted many prestigious tournaments over the years. Club members, Margaret and Harriot Curtis, together donated the Curtis Cup which fosters international competition between a team of the best female amateurs in the United States and a team from Great Britain and Ireland. The Club was honored to host the 1938 and 2010 Curtis Cup Matches. Other large events hosted at Essex include the 1995 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, along with several state and regional competitions. Tournament golf returned to Essex with the 2020 Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship and the upcoming 2023 Massachusetts Amateur Championship. Approximately 18,000 rounds are played annually at Essex County Club. The golf course is currently ranked #79 in the country by Golf Digest, #64 by Golf Magazine and #39 (Classic) by Golfweek Magazine. Golf Magazine ranks ECC as one of the top 150 golf courses in the world. The golf shop also won 2019 Merchandiser of the Year for the New England PGA Section.
