Website St. Davids Golf Club
St. Davids Golf Club (“St. Davids”) was founded in 1897 and in 1927 opened an 18-hole Donald Ross-designed course in the center of Wayne, Pa. Located in the middle of Philadelphia’s Main Line, the club has a long history of membership who love golf as it is a true “Golf Club”. Donald Ross was hired by the Club to design the golf course we enjoy today. In 1936, A.W. Tillinghast visited the Club and consulted the Club on a change to be made on the 9th hole to turn it into a par-3. St. Davids has played host to numerous local, state and regional championships dating back to 1901 when it first hosted the Philadelphia Amateur. Other notable events hosted include U.S. Open Qualifying in 1939 & 1976, PGA Championship Qualifying in 1963 and two Pennsylvania Open Championships in 1948 & 1952. The 1952 Open featured a young Arnold Palmer making one of his only two appearances in his home state’s open championship. A double bogey on the par-3 6th, the shortest hole on the course and considered to be one of the easiest on property by the SDGC membership, forced Palmer into a playoff he would eventually lose. St. Davids has always held a prominent role and position in the Philadelphia area when it comes to golf. Some of the more prominent clubs in the area can credit St. Davids and their members for their founding. James Govan served as the Club’s Professional from 1900 until 1914 when he left to join St. Davids member, George Crump, who had designed and founded Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. Twelve St. Davids members also purchased the land that would later become Gulph Mills Golf Club in 1916. St. Davids recognizes it’s place in the region and fosters that reputation by being an actively supportive member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP), Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia (WGAP), the Philadelphia PGA and local foundations and trusts like the Evans Scholars Foundation and the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust. Although the golf course is open year-round, the Club’s official golf season runs from April through October. St. Davids annually hosts approximately 25,000 rounds with 18,000 of those occurring in-season. To best serve our members and guests, the Professional Staff and Outside Operations team are joined by a robust caddie program of over 80 caddies to provide a classic, golf club experience on a daily basis. The tournament program at St. Davids is passionately supported by its membership and features events dating back over 100 years! In addition to the events for our members, the Club also hosts up to 10 Monday outings throughout the season to help raise money for area schools, athletic programs, scholarships and other fundraisers. In the shoulder seasons, area schools call St. Davids home to best prepare for their seasons. In addition to two high schools, St. Davids is home to both the Eastern University golf teams and Villanova Univeristy’s golf program.
