Once the dust settles, people are not going to travel far. They are more likely to use their home club more. They will be busier as will the summer home clubs like the beach and the mountains. High end resorts are likely to see less business with the amount of reduction correlated to difficulty of travel. Remote places will see more of a downturn versus easy to reach places. High end UK and Ireland clubs will be the most impacted.
The duration of stay in place orders and in turn a club’s comfort level with having guest play, the return of full food and beverage service, and the return of caddie services.
There will be a lot of pent up demand when this is over and I am still optimistic on a busy summer.
I anticipate our rounds will be up once play is permitted. Our membership levels have not been impacted at this point and I suspect members will crave the companionship of their friends and fellow members when this self quarantining period passes. Likewise, with sporting events, concerts and other public gatherings in question there will be less competition for our members leisure time.
While I anticipate play being up, unfortunately I anticipate merchandise sales being down 15-25% from last year. The hard goods market I believe will be tough. It is yet to be determined in what format or even if fitting experiences will be allowed to take place?
I believe that golf will be played, and may do well for the year. Not tournaments, but regular play. Tournaments have a social component. The social components of the club and hospitality industry are, and will most likely continue to be, compromised for the remainder of the year. Until individuals can feel completely safe entering a small gathering, we will be affected negatively.
It’s too early to tell right now in my opinion, but I’m happy to see that golf is considered to be one of the few things we can do right now. My guess would be that clubs will lose maybe 50% of guest fee revenue for 2020 due to the pandemic which will also lead to significant decreases in shop sales, f&b sales, etc. Hopefully this will be a one off year, and 2021 will get back to normal.
I think the remainder of 2020 looks really promising, with pent up demand and people looking for activities that will be social distance approved. I think we need to be creative with events, tee times replacing shotgun events, etc. As soon as we get past this virus I think we will be booming.
I think that golf played, in terms of number of rounds, make actually go up by open facility. People that golf are grasping to use the sport for exercise, social and distraction I think retail and staffing levels may go down as far as 40 to 50%.
I think resorts will struggle until people feel safe travelling again, but clubs will benefit from their members staying home. I am expecting a very busy summer at the club once restrictions start to loosen up.

Travel is going to struggle, so resort play will be way down, but private and public will be very busy as people get outside and enjoy the fresh air.
Very challenging. It will be a new world. Nothing will be the same. Creativity will be needed and flexibility. To provide safe healthy service.

The year of the Member. Very limited tournaments with no or very small member guest events. LOTS OF WALKING
