Our season is seasonal from May 15th from October 15th. We are expecting to open up on time. Most of our members come from cities like Houston, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia so we will have a delay in our season as we will lose 10 percent of our season for quarantines. We expect to lose 40 percent of our revenue from dues, guest fees, and merchandise sales. Food and Beverage should take a bigger hit. Going with 40 percent on the golf side, 60 percent on the food and beverage side.
It’s going to be a very challenging year, I suspect.
Pros who own their shop will need to be very smart with their money and scale back their inventory. I plan on stocking nothing but basics this year as layoffs have struck our club membership hard and have a lot of members who have requested Leave of Absence for the season. With government restrictions, lessons income will be next to nothing this season. The goal for the 2020 season should be to stay healthy and do the best that you can with what you have.
I am at a facility very close to ground zero of the virus. I am hopeful our members can walk and carry by early/mid May. I dont expect any outings to take place for 2020 or at least very limited in the late fall. I am hopeful we can conduct at least the major events on our tournament calendar however I am not certain we will be able to do a member guest unless it is modified with tee times and no gatherings for F&B. I think F&B could be closed for 2020 or at the minimum a take out only scenario. Obviously, there will be new protocols such as single riders, no caddies until its safe, limited pro shop customers at one time etc… I am hopeful we can play at least a couple of Section major events but suspect participation will be low due to pros not wanting to leave their facility or give up potential lesson income, not to mention the expense to play.
In all honesty, Golf will be a very important activity moving forward. People will continue to focus on social activities and being outdoors. Unfortunately I see the economic downturn hurting most apparel and equipment sales other than the necessities.
I fear clubs will be stuck with spring merchandise for much longer than anticipated and fall orders will suffer. Hopefully I’m wrong.
It seems that golf will be significantly impacted far beyond just when we are able to return to business. The virus and fear from our customers/members will continue to drive all clubs to maintain sanitizing procedures, social distancing practices, and other restrictions through most of the remaining 2020 season. I feel that most large events, especially those connected to F&B events will be extensively scaled back or cancelled altogether.
The outlook looks it might be slow at first but I think that business will get busy when summer and fall begin.
Once we can reopen I expect very strong member play and very weak outing and guest play.
Pessimistic esp for golf shop sales. rounds may stay steady at my club but revenues will take a hit with outing business

It looks like we’ll be set back until June. Should make for an interesting rescheduling process.

Private Facilities in chicago? Golf only…no shotguns / no caddies / no golf shops…just golf.
